Odd — I always found that scene where Dave slowly lobotomizes HAL to be very sad — despite HAL’s murderous capabilities. I think it’s HAL’s plaintive pleading to stop, and the chilling analysis of feeling his mind slowly going away. Contemporary parallel with an awareness of your own Alzheimer-induced dementia, and its inevitable progress? (Or the end of the Keyes book “Flowers for Algernon,” which freaked me when I read it in 7th grade.) Further proof I’m a hardshelled softie….
hey charly – your guts ARE gooey. (Although that Algernon book really got me too.) Just wait til you’re out in deep space saying “Open the pod bay door, HAL.” and getting no response. But don’t feel too bad for HAL; I think Clarke was able to resurrect him for a sequel with a new chipset and a couple of twists of a screwdriver. If only we could be so fortunate; my memory is already not what it was.
